Who controls the future?

The other day I was listening to my ipod and came across a song I haven't heard since I was probably in the same grade as you guys are now. The song was by Rage Against the Machine. As I was repeating the lyrics in my head I realized that the chorus for the song was a direct quote from 1984! The singer says "Who controls the present now, controls the furure. Who controls the present now, controls the past."

Now, the singer from Rage Against the Machine is talking about the United States and its supposed control over the general population. But, what do you think this quote means in the book? I couldn't help but think about the way in which the party (Big Brother) disposes of any form of history, especially records of the deceased. Doesn't it seem crazy that a government can do this without people knowing? And don't you think that someone would have done something about it? I think the quote I mentioned earlier might have something to say about all of this. Let me know what you guys think.

I think the quote is true. It reminds me of the book of Howard Zinn and how he state that the text books don't tell the whole story and only what they wnat you to hear (or read). And history is written by the winnners. Because what nation wants to state that they lost some type of battle making themselves feel inferior. Thats what Big Borther is doing Today...Right?

It's crazy, but not unbelievable, considering our own government's reluctance to declassify what individuals consider sensitve information. I can't remember the source, but I've heard on multiple occasions that our current government is classifying previously unclassified data at an unprecedented rate. That is why its ever so important that people take advantage of freedom of information act is so important. These so called Sunshine Laws get common people access to information that should be public.

I mean, if this is a democracy, then an informed citizenry is required. Conversely, if you are in power, or have certain interests, this power or these interests can be protected by the existence of an ignorant public.

i think that the government shouldnt be able to watch everything we do. For example people of this country has private things that other people shouldnt hear or watch. Being watched feels like you are being control by someone or you feel like your a robot that has no control over what you do. if i was being watched all the time i would do something that would make the cameras not event pay attention. i wouldnt want the government to look at my information without my information or if i was to do something.

I think that quote in the book means:
Seeing as Big Brother controls everything now then he controls what has happened and what will happen.
Big Brother erases everthing that has happened that he doesn't want remembered. Everything that is going to happen that he doesn't want to happen he will stop from happening.

I feel that the quote explains that we as citizens does not have control over what happens in life, the person who is in "control" has the ability to control the past, present, and the future because we stand for nothing, other than what we are told. In retrospect to the bok they don't have the ability to express there own opinions, they don't even have the opportunity to think about the oppsing party (Big Brother). The government does not have the right to control our information, but they do. The government has the ability to peek in on private lives and secret information, although if we felt that the person was a threat to society then we should peek in to protect the nation.

Looking back at the quote "who controls the present now, controls the future. Who controls the present now, controls the past." it means that the person in control now made decisions in the past that has reflected on the present and will effect the future.
